Flash Memory Cards Overview
Intel's Flash memory cards bring the code and data file storage advantages of Intel StrataFlash(TM) memory and FlashFile(TM) memory to embedded systems and portable electronics systems. These products provide the low cost, extended system battery life, high performance, ruggedness and reliability that are required for today's embedded systems applications.
Series 200 Miniature Cards
The Series 200 Miniature Card is based on the recently introduced Intel StrataFlash(TM) memory technology. Intel StrataFlash memory devices are the first flash
memory products to store multiple bits of digital information in one memory cell. By providing "2x the bits in 1x the space," Intel StrataFlash
memory allows for greater densities at a significant cost reduction, while continuing to offer the core benefits of flash memory -- non-volatility, high
reliability and a smaller form factor. The Intel Series 200 Flash Memory Miniature Cards are a PC-compatible digital media that store image, text and voice data in a variety of digital consumer products. Intel now offers one of the most cost-effective removable-media solutions for digital products, such as those based on the new Intel 971 PC Camera Kit. The Series 200 Miniature Card is available in 4-, 8- and 16-Mbyte densities.
Series 100 Miniature Cards
The Series 100 Miniature Card is available in 2-, 4- and 8- Mbyte densities, the Series 100 is a low cost flash memory card designed with portable consumer electronics systems in mind. Digital photography, audio recording, wireless communications, and handheld computing are ideal applications for Miniature Cards, which are favored for their low cost and compactness. The Intel Series 100 card is based on the Miniature Card Specification, available through the Miniature Card Implementers Forum (MCIF), which defines a low-cost removable media for portable systems. When used in conjunction with host-based filing system software, such Flash Translation Layer
(FTL), the Series 100 cards offer the system user file format compatibility across a wide range of
systems.
Value Series 100 PC Cards
Intel's newest Flash Memory PC card, the Value Series 100, available in 2-, 4-, 8-Mbyte densities, offers a low cost, removable, solid-state storage solution for code and data, as well as for high performance disk emulation. It is ideally suited to industrial oriented applications, such as network routing, switching, and mobile computing. Combined with file management software, such as FTL, it provides high performance disk emulation for rugged environments and applications. These Flash Memory PC cards enhance applications through their symmetrically blocked architecture, extended Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and 5V operation. They can be used as a simple x16 linear array of flash devices. The PC Card form factor offers an industry-standard pin out, removable linear flash memory and the ability to upgrade system memory and software without changing board layout. The functionality of the Value Series 100
Flash Memory PC cards is based on Intel's 8-Mbit FlashFile memories.
Series 2 PC Cards
Intel's second generation Flash Memory PC cards feature block erasure, which offers data file and application storage in removable nonvolatile memory. Intel's Series 2 Flash Memory PC cards are available in 2-, 4-, 10- and 20-Mbyte densities. They are ideally suited to industrial oriented applications, such as network
routing, switching, and mobile computing. Combined with file management software, such as FTL, it provides high performance disk emulation for rugged environments and applications. The functionality of the Series 2 Flash Memory PC cards is based on Intel's 8-Mbit FlashFile memories. Each memory card consists of a PCMCIA connector, an array of 28F008SA flash memories in TSOP packaging and card-control logic. The control logic provides the system interface and controls the internal flash memories. Intel Flash memory cards feature fast random access, byte-wide and word-wide operation, low power modes and a Card
Information Structure (CIS) for easy identification of card characteristics.
